Innovation is in the D.E.T.A.I.L.

In the corporate environment, one of the first prerequisites to becoming successful is the ability to remember and create acronyms. I remember sending acronym emails to help protect Intellectual Property and provide entertainment to the new hires on the distribution.


I still remember one of my first technical coaches preaching: "believe nothing you hear and half of what you see". In my assignments, I formed habits to independently investigate truth beyond human senses. Most have heard the idiom "Devil is in the Detail". Well, it's axiomatic that "God is in the Detail"! Devil implies hidden issues, God implies hidden breakthroughs!


So naturally, I thought of an acronym. D.E.T.A.I.L.

Environment

To

Acquire

Infinite

Learning


When it comes to Innovation, the greatest breakthroughs are often found when someone dives into the detail. Even in problem solving, we are taught to define at least 5 Whys for an event to better define the root of causation.


Just think of the detail required for Today's technical discoveries, such as:

  • DNA double helix structure for modern genomics

  • Radioactivity, atomic nuclei, and nuclear fission for nuclear energy

  • Binary, transistors, integrated circuits, microprocessors for widespread personal computing

  • Packet switched network, modems, protocols, fiber optic for foundation of modern internet

  • Piezoelectric effect for non-invasive ultrasound imaging

  • Quantum, AI, neuromorphic computing...


By simply looking through microscopic lenses, I have witnessed what we think is razor sharp actually has jagged edges causing major losses across production, what we think is aligned is significantly offset causing unacceptable quality defects, and what we think has uniformity is widely variable creating countless supply chain issues.


The same is true in organizational culture. Are the words declared by leadership and written on the walls spoken in the halls, break rooms, and on the floor? Make sure you talk to people at each level, especially the front lines to ensure the culture is healthy and you see sparks of joy in the eyes of all employees!


So remember, next time you hear or see something (regardless if it is social, technical, or personal) pause and spend time in the omnipresent D.E.T.A.I.L.!
